The Centurion\u2019s Servant Healed, Matthew 8:5-13<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came up to Him, begging Him:\u00a0 \u201cLord, my servant is lying at the house sick of palsy (paralyzed) and grievously tormented, distressed with intense pain.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (A centurion was a Roman military officer.)\u00a0 Jesus simply said to him:\u00a0 \u201cI will come and heal him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The centurion taken by surprise, said:\u00a0 \u201cLord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof.\u00a0 I am not fit.\u00a0 But speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.\u00a0 For I am a man under authority, with soldiers subject to me.\u00a0 I say to one of them \u2018Go\u2019 and he goes.\u00a0 I say to another, \u2018Come\u2019 and he comes.\u00a0 I say to my slave, \u2018Do this,\u201d and he does it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Jesus heard what the centurion said, He marveled and said to those who followed Him:<\/p>\n

\u201cTruly or verily I tell you, I HAVE NOT FOUND SO GREAT FAITH AS THIS WITH ANYONE, even in Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west and shall sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.\u00a0 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness:\u00a0 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.\u201d \u00a0Here Jesus was talking about the Jews rejecting Him and the time of the Gentiles brought forward for a season.<\/p>\n

Then Jesus turned to the centurion and said:\u00a0 \u201cGo your way; it shall be done for you as you have believed.\u201d<\/p>\n

And his servant was healed, restored to health at that very moment.<\/p>\n

There is much we can learn from this healing.\u00a0 The man asking for healing was not even a Jew; he was a Gentile.\u00a0 Jesus had come for the Jews at that point and had not died yet and taken on our sins and sicknesses for the whole world, regardless of race or culture.\u00a0 According to that time period, he should not have even been allowed to talk with Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus was, as far as everyone was concerned, born a Jew.\u00a0 He had no business talking to a Gentile, particularly the hated Roman military man.\u00a0 Yet here Jesus was talking to him and sending healing his way.<\/p>\n

The next thing we observe is that the centurion was not even asking for healing for himself; he was asking for healing for someone else.\u00a0 And the servant was healed by Jesus speaking the word to the Centurion that his servant was healed.<\/p>\n

BUT the greatest thing we learn is that Jesus marvels at faith in the centurion.\u00a0 He marvels at one who understands authority and thus understands the authority Jesus has over sickness and disease.\u00a0 This centurion recognized one with authority, because he was used to authority both as one in charge and as one who submitted to authority.\u00a0 I believe Jesus also marvels at the man\u2019s desire for his servant to be healed.\u00a0 That showed compassion and concern on the part of the centurion.<\/p>\n

What was this centurion\u2019s faith based on?\u00a0 Jesus Word!\u00a0 He told Jesus that all He had to do was speak the word, and it would be done.\u00a0 The centurion said that it was a simple fact.\u00a0 One who has authority speaks the command and expects it to be done.\u00a0 So, he said:\u00a0 Speak.\u00a0 Whatever you speak will be carried out just like the ones under me carry out whatever I speak.\u00a0 It was all about faith in the man called Jesus and the authority the centurion recognized He carried.\u00a0 Most of Jesus\u2019 fellow countrymen did not have a clue about that authority.\u00a0 That is why Jesus marveled.<\/p>\n

What a teaching on faith this scenario presents to us and what wonderful lessons we can learn about faith and healing and the word and authority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
